SURPRISE, AZ (April 18, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Tennis Team (20-6) won the third place match of the PacWest Tournament 5-1 over Cal State LA (10-9) on a neutral court on Saturday.
The Sharks were strong in doubles, winning all three matches. The 11th ranked doubles team of
Kristyna Hancarova and
Nicole Hoynaski were perfect with an 8-0 win at the top of the lineup.
Lea Kruse-Utermann and
Lorena Gheorghe followed suit with an 8-3 win. HPU made it a clean sweep with an 8-5 victory at third doubles from
Sofia Tavitian and
Vivian Hansen.
CSULA got on the board by winning at sixth singles. However, HPU quickly ended the match when Hoynaski (6-3, 6-1) and Gheorghe (6-2, 6-2) each tallied reasonably easy wins.
HPU now will wait for the final regional rankings. The Sharks will mostly likely be ranked second or third which will put them in a one-match regional playoff.
