SURPRISE, AZ (May 13, 2015) – The 11th ranked Hawai'i Pacific Women's Team ran into a buzz saw in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II National Championships. HPU fell 5-1 to top ranked Armstrong State (30-0).
The non-seeded draw was not kind to the Sharks as HPU had to face the undefeated Pirates in the opening round. HPU made the match interesting in doubles when the team of
Lorena Gheorghe and
Lea Kruse-Utermann made a statement with an 8-4 win over the #20 doubles pair in the nation. However, Armstrong took first and third doubles to lead 2-1 going into singles.
The Pirates proved why they are the favorites to win the national championship in singles, quickly earning wins at first, third and fifth singles.
Despite the setback, HPU ends the season at 21-7 and made its ninth consecutive trip to the national tournament.
