Erika Ellis helped the Hawaii Pacific women's soccer team claim a 2-1 victory over BYU-Hawaii in a non-conference clash at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.
The Sharks (2-2) surged ahead 2-1 in the 84
th minute as
Stefanie Catone and
Sara Romo pieced together passes to Ellis, who drilled a shot within the 18-yard box that ricocheted off Seasider goalkeeper Daryl Kaufusi that trickled into the goal for the deciding score.
BYU-Hawaii (0-2) had tied the match at 1-1 when, in the 78
th minute, Natalie Reynolds scored off a rebound that clanked off the crossbar within the six-yard box.
HPU initially jumped ahead as
Sierra Kadooka crossed to freshman
Noelle Mercado, who deposited the ball in the back of the net in the game's 10
th minute.
The Seasiders out-shot HPU 12-10, thanks in part to a late flurry of attacks, but Sharks goalkeeper
Kelby Boswell racked up five saves to hold the visitors to one goal.
HPU returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 12:30 p.m. at Atherton Field to face Chaminade in a non-conference clash.
