Box Score WAIPIO, HAWAII (September 7, 2015)—The Hawaii Pacific men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought match to undefeated Cal State Monterey Bay, 2-1, at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Sharks (0-2) fell behind early as Monterey senior midfielder Rudy Gonzales scored in the game's 3
rd minute on a perfectly-placed cross from Nick Stanley.
The home team would create multiple scoring opportunities later in the opening frame, but the Otter defense remained organized and thwarted the threats.
HPU answered in the 46
th minute when Divin Fula Lazolo struck a wicked free kick from 35 yards out that pin-balled off a defender and into the back of the net. The score was the first allowed by Monterey Bay this season.
The Otters (3-0) would regain the lead in the 55
th minute as midfielder Michael Maul took a pass and streaked down the right sideline until he found an opening and unleashed a knuckling shot past HPU goalkeeper
Eduardo Palacios.
"We let one get away tonight. Two mistakes cost us the game," said HPU coach
Chris Fisher. "Otherwise, we played well. We dictated the pace of the game and played in their half 90 percent of the time. We deserved better, but that's soccer."
Both squads exuded passion on both ends of the pitch, some of which boiled over into a few confrontations, but the referees prevented any fisticuffs. Overall, six yellow-card cautions were handed out.
The Sharks return to the pitch on Sept. 16 at 3 p.m. when they host BYU-Hawaii in a non-conference tilt at Atherton Field.
