HONOLULU — Guards
Chauncey Orr and
Connor Looney did it again on Saturday night in leading Hawai'i Pacific University to a 77-71 over No. 12 Alaska Anchorage in the GNAC-PacWest Challenge on Friday night at Moanalua High School gym.
Orr, a graduate student from Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green, got his second double-double of the young season with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds with a block. Looney, a senior from Palmer, Alaska/Palmer, added 20 points with three assists and three steals for the Sharks (2-0).
Senior guard
Jordan Martin of Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium scored 11 points with four steals and sophomore forward
Jonothan Janssen of Noosa Heads, Australia/Mountain Creek adding 10 points off the bench.
Diante Mitchell and Sekou Wiggs each scored 18 points with Mitchell adding five assists for the 12th ranked Seawolves (0-2). Spencer Svejcar and Connor Devine each scored 10 points, with Corey Hammell grabbing 10 rebounds with eight points.
"This was a great win," said HPU head coach
Darren Vorderbruegge. "We fought off foul trouble to beat a top 15 team. That's tough to do and I'm so proud of our guys."
The Sharks shot 46 percent from the floor and 32 percent from the 3-point arc, while nailing 21-of-29 (72 percent) from the free throw line.
HPU held the Seawolves to just 37 percent from the floor and only 20 percent from the arc. UAA also connected on 66 percent (23-of-35) from the charity stripe. UAA held a 40-35 advantage on the boards.
Alaska Anchorage jumped out to an early 12-5 lead after the first six minutes of play. HPU followed with an 8-1 run to tie the game a 13-all on a Janssen 3-pointer with 12:11 in the first.
UAA extended the lead to 24-17 before the Sharks started nipping away at the deficit. Down three with 2:22 to go in the half, Orr went on a 7-0 run of his own in the next minute and 16 seconds to give HPU the lead it would not relinquish. The Sharks carried a 35-30 advantage into the half.
HPU opened up an eight point advantage early in the second half, just to see UAA counter bringing it back to five at 48-43. That's when the Sharks attacked.
Janssen hit a 3-pointer to start a 6-0 run midway through the half to build an 11-point advantage and the Sharks eventually opened up a 15-point lead at 68-53 with 4:23 to play on a Martin trey.
HPU held on after losing Orr and big men
Elliott DeFreitas and
Spencer Vering to fouls by sinking 6-of-7 from the foul line in the last minute to pull out the six-point triumph.
"Getting a pair of wins over good NCAA Division II teams is a great way to open up the season," said Vorderbruegge. "We needed games like we've had this weekend to get ready for play in the PacWest which was ranked as one of the strongest conferences in Division II entering this season."
The Sharks are off until next Saturday when they return to action at the Moanalua High Gym against Oakland City University, an NCAA Division II independent. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. on Dec. 19.
