HONOLULU –Hawai'i Pacific University never trailed as the Sharks clobbered West Coast Baptist (Calif.) 111-38 on Tuesday night at Moanalua High School Gym.
The Sharks (4-0) jumped out to an 11-0 lead before the Eagles (1-6) knew what hit them.
Every player on the HPU bench scored and played at least 10 minutes in the 73-point win.
Senior
Connor Looney of Palmer, Alaska/Palmer, led the Sharks with 29 points in 21 minutes with five rebounds has he hit 10-of-13 shots from the floor including 7-of-9 from the 3-point arc.
Chauncey Orr, a graduate student from Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green, added 20 points with six rebounds, eight assists and four steals while shooting 9-of-12 himself. Senior
Jordan Martin of Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium added 16 points with four assists as HPU's only other double-digit scorer.
West Coast Baptist was paced by sophomore Timothy Carr who collected 13 points and senior Imaan Vicente who posted 12 points with seven rebounds.
HPU shot 57 percent from the floor (40-of-70), including 45 percent from the 3-point arc, while holding WCBC to just 24 percent from the field (15-of-62) and 6-of-30 from the arc (20 percent).
The Sharks played well on both ends of the floor as the NCCAA Eagles struggled from the tipoff against the taller and quicker NCAA Division II squad.
"I was happy we kept our focus against a team we were much better against tonight," said HPU head coach
Darren Vorderbruegge. "We were able to play everybody and they all received significant minutes."
The Sharks built up a 56-9 lead at the half and extended their lead to 77 before settling for the 111-38 final.
HPU will be back on the floor on Friday evening when they play in the Thanksgiving Hoops in Hawai'i Classic at BYU-Hawaii's Cannon Activity Center. The Sharks face Carlton University on Friday at 5 p.m. in the classic's opening game.
