Orr pops for 31 as HPU rolls Northern New Mexico 91-67

HONOLULU — Behind a career-high 31 points from swingman Chauncey Orr, Hawai'i Pacific University never trailed in defeating Northern New Mexico 91-67 Monday afternoon in non-conference play at the Moanalua High School Gym.

The Sharks (11-0, 4-0 PacWest), won their 11th straight game before taking time off for the holidays. The NNMC Eagles (2-12) dropped their 12th straight with the loss.

Orr, a 6-4 graduate student from Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green, hit 13-of-18 shots from the field and 4-of-7 from the 3-point arc to go with hitting his only free throw attempt in collecting 31 points. He also led the team with eight rebounds and added four assists and three steals.

"Chauncey really pulled us through until we got into the game," said HPU head coach Darrin Vorderbruegge. "We came out flat as a team, but responded in the second half."

Forward Elliott DeFrietas, a 6-10 senior from Essex, England/County Upper, chipped in 12 points and six boards, while guard Connor Looney, a 6-2 senior from Palmer, Alaska/Palmer, tossed in 11 points with four steals. Senior Jordan Martin the 5-11 guard from Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium, dished out seven assists for the Sharks.

Northern New Mexico got 15 points from Bryce Simmons off the bench, to go with 14 points and five rebounds from Mikaere Watene, and 12 points from Adrian Infante.

HPU connected on 54 percent (35-of-65) from the field, including 9-of-22 (41 percent) from the 3-point arc and 12-of-17 (71 percent) from the foul line.

The Eagles shot 39 percent from the floor (22-of-57) with 16 percent (3-of-19) from the arc and 20-of-27 (74 percent) from the free throw line. HPU dominated the boards 45-26.

HPU opened the game on a 10-2 run only to have NNMC close the gap to four at 31-27 with 4:54 to play in the opening half. The Sharks answered that with a 10-0 run, eventually making it a 12-4 run to end the half with a 43-31 lead at intermission.

HPU exploded at the start of the second half using a 21-4 run keyed by a steal and layup by Orr and the Eagles could not get within 20 for the rest of the contest.

HPU would extend the lead to 34 at 81-47 before easing off the throttle for a 24-point victory.

All 11 Sharks scored in the contest against Northern New Mexico and each played a minimum of 10 minutes in the game.

The Sharks will be off the court for a week, then will return to action on Friday, Dec. 30, when they host Northwest Indian College (Wash.) in a 6:30 p.m. contest at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.
