Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, Hawaii (February 21, 2016) – The Hawaii Pacific baseball team split a doubleheader with Felician (N.J.) University, winning 6-5 in the opener and dropping the return matchup 8-3, to conclude a five-game series at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (8-2) finished the series with three victories and received a stellar relief effort from
Kyle Detwiler (2-0) in the opener as the hurler held the opposition scoreless over 3 1/3 innings and notched the win after his offense turned a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 advantage via a two-run sixth inning.
Closer
Brandon Bonilla came on to retire the visitors in the ninth frame despite allowing his first hit in five appearances for HPU. The lefty earned his third save of the young season thanks to deft defensive plays from second baseman
Bronson Aiwohi and shortstop
Tyler Tokunaga. The middle infielders each made diving stops and threw out runners to prevent the tying run from coming across.
Tanner Marty came up big at the plate for the Sharks in the first matchup as the left fielder notched two hits and 2 RBI.
The Golden Falcons (2-3) took the second game, in which they scored three unearned runs via three Sharks errors. Eight of Felician's nine batters posted at least one hit, and HPU starter
Tyler Van Stone (1-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits through 5 1/3 innings.
Bonilla, the son of former Major League slugger Bobby Bonilla, joined the Sharks after spending time at both Arizona State and Grand Canyon Universities. The hard-throwing relief option, who can let it fly at 97 mph, also boasts a biting slider that darts in toward right-handed hitters.
Bonilla was selected in the 37
th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft in 2011 after his time at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., by the Colorado Rockies. He was then picked in 2014 via the 25
th round of the MLB June Amateur Draft by the Baltimore Orioles, but chose instead to focus on earning his college degree; he's currently a graduate student at HPU.
The Sharks are aiming to improve on their 27-20 record from last year, which included a 17-15 mark in conference play. HPU was picked to finish seventh in a very competitive 10-team PacWest Conference via a preseason vote by league coaches.
Under the guidance of 11
th-year skipper
Garett Yukumoto, who is the program's winningest coach with a 297-198-1 mark, the Sharks are following the pace set by 13 seniors on the roster, including Garcia.
HPU returns to Hans L'Orange Park on Friday, Feb. 26 (4 p.m./7:30 p.m.) for a double dip to begin PacWest play against Concordia (Irvine, Calif.) University.
