HONOLULU (March 8, 2016) – Hawaii Pacific senior
Thibaud Berland and junior
Nicole Hoynaski were named PacWest Players of the Week after the Sharks men and women turned in strong performances on the road last week.
Berland led No. 2 Hawaii Pacific to four wins over nationally-ranked opponents in its Southern California road swing last week. The sixth-ranked singles player bested two of the top singles players in the nation in the first two matches at No. 1 singles. He beat No. 16 Andre Staab of Point Loma (6-1, 6-1) then knocked off No. 1 Jan Meyer of Azusa Pacific (6-4, 7-6), snapping the top-ranked player's 25-match winning streak.
Berland's singles match against No. 1 Barry went unfinished as the Sharks swept, 5-0. His opponent from UC San Diego retired due to injury in the first set. Berland has not lost in singles this spring, winning five matches via straight-set fashion.
The native of Lusignan, France, also teamed with
Alexander Meyer for four wins at No. 1 doubles. The duo is a perfect 8-0 this season.
Hoynaski led the ninth-ranked Sharks to a 4-2 record on their Southern California road swing, during which the Sharks tussled with top teams in the national rankings. The No. 41 singles player from Sydney, Australia, was 5-1 in singles, including a win over No. 36 Sabrina Keiberg of Nova Southeastern (6-1, 5-7, 6-0).
She was also 6-0 at No. 1 doubles with her partner
Kristyna Hancarova. The duo, currently ranked No. 4 in the nation, beat top-20 tandems from UC San Diego and Barry.
The HPU women face off with Dominican on Wednesday, March 9 at 10 a.m. at Kailua Racquet Club, while the Sharks men hit the road to face Metropolitan State University of Denver on March 18 in Colorado.
