SURPRISE, Ariz. (April 16, 2016) – The ninth-ranked Hawaii Pacific women's tennis team came up short of securing the PacWest Championship and fell 5-1 to top-ranked BYU-Hawaii in the tourney finale at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Center.
HPU (15-5) saw its top-ranked doubles team of
Kristyna Hancarova (sophomore from Karvina, Czech Republic) and
Nicole Hoynaski (junior from Sydney, Australia) fall to 16-3 on the season after the tandem was defeated by the No. 2 team of Nannan Zhang and Xin Wen, 8-4. The Sharks teams of
Lorena Gheorghe and
Syna Kayser as well as
Oceane Adam and
Julia Sauer also fell to BYU-Hawaii.
The Seasiders (22-0) leaned on Zhang, the top-ranked singles player, as she downed No. 15 Hancarova 6-1, 6-0. HPU picked up its lone singles win of the day via Gheorghe, who bested Jeong-Min Jeon 6-1, 6-0.
BYU-Hawaii's victory represented the program's 10
th PacWest women's crown and the Seasiders are the only women's squad to win the crown in the history of the conference. Zhang also took home Tournament MVP honors after remaining undefeated in both singles and doubles action.
