PENSACOLA, Fla. (April 8, 2016) – The top-ranked Hawaii Pacific men's tennis team downed No. 8 Valdosta State (Ga.) University 5-2 to continue its road swing in Florida.
The Sharks (14-1) won two of three doubles matches and three singles matchups en route to securing the victory with two matches unfinished.
HPU senior
Thibaud Berland continued his undefeated run in singles action and the top-ranked player in the country improved to 12-0 with a 6-2, 7-6 win over No. 8 Leo Blay. Berland is a two-time PacWest Player of the Week, and last season, was named ITA All-American and PacWest Newcomer of the Year.
No. 20 Jaume Martinez Vich and
Clemens Graute also secured singles wins for HPU.
The top-ranked doubles tandem of Berland and
Alexander Meyer were victorious and posted an 8-6 triumph over Fernando Rivas and Niklas Herbring. The No. 1 duo is now 14-1 this season.
HPU also received a win from the doubles tandem of
Jakub Hadrava and Graute, who defeated Gereon Heitmann and Rivas, 9-7.
HPU's men continue to gear up for the PacWest Championships in Surprise, Ariz. The Sharks face Georgia Gwinnett College (April 9 at 3 p.m.) and Armstrong State University (April 10 at noon) before heading to the league tournament, which kicks off April 13.
