HPU Men Advance to NCAA DII Tennis Championship, Sharks Women Fall in Semifinals

DENVER, Colo. (May 20, 2016) – The Hawaii Pacific men's tennis team swept its way into the title match of the NCAA Division II Tennis Championships on Friday at Metro State University and will vie for the coveted crown on Saturday.

The third-ranked HPU men (20-3) defeated No. 35 Ferris State (25-5) 5-0 and will take on top-ranked Saint Leo (Fla.) University (27-1) for the National Championship on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Sharks will look to repeat their early-season success as HPU defeated the Lions, 7-1, and handed the opponent their lone loss of the campaign on March 19, also in Denver. This marks the third consecutive trip to the title match for the Sharks, who finished as the runner-up in each of the last two seasons.

The No. 7 HPU women (18-6) were swept 5-0 by No. 3 Armstrong State (31-1) to end their season.

HPU's men claimed all three doubles matchups, including a victory by the third-ranked team of Thibaud Berland and Alexander Meyer, who notched an 8-3 triumph over Vasil Surduk and Nur Adim Ramdani. The Sharks duo of Filip Dolezel and Jaume Martinez-Vich defeated the squad of Till von Winning and Daniil Tarantinov, 8-5, while Torben Otto and Jakub Hadrava were also victorious and defeated Steward Sell and Conner Hunt, 8-6.

Berland – the top-ranked singles player in the country and reigning PacWest Player of the Year – then knocked off Surduk 6-1, 6-4, and Otto bested Tarantinov 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the win for HPU with four matches unfinished.

The HPU women could not overcome the talented one-loss squad from Armstrong State, despite putting up a fight in the doubles competition.

HPU's No. 4 doubles tandem of Kristyna Hancarova and Nicole Hoynaski fell 8-5 to the third-ranked duo of Lena Lutzeier and Diana Stomlega. The Sharks' No. 20 team of Lorena Gheorghe and Syna Kayser also came up just short, falling to Alejandra Cisneros and Carolina PratsMillan, 8-6. Nicole Fossa Huergo and Lena Pacholski then defeated HPU's Oceane Adam and Julia Sauer, 8-5, to complete the doubles sweep before closing things out early in the singles competition.
