KAILUA KONA, Hawai'i – The No. 5 Hawai'i Pacific University women's tennis team opened the 2017 team season with a pair of victories at Holua Tennis Center last weekend.
The Sharks (2-0) defeated No. 22 Sonoma State (Calif.) 6-3 on Saturday, then downed Hawai'i-Hilo 9-0 on Monday.
The Sharks will be in action again on Monday, Feb. 27, when they host Chaminade in an 11 a.m. match.

The No. 5 Sharks followed by winning four of the six singles matches, highlighted by the battle of Top 10 ranked singles players at No. 1. HPU's eighth-ranked Hoyanski dispatched SSU's ninth-ranked Warren 6-1, 6-1 to lead the way.
HPU's Meccico won at No. 2 over Kearney 6-0, 6-1,
Oceane Adam def. Kaitlyn Haithcock 6-0, 4-1 retired, at No. 3 and Dos Santos beat DeTurk 4-6, 7-6, 10-5 at No. 5. SSU's Amanda Zuidema beat Kijasova 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 and Karlee Budge beat the Sharks Greene 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
Hawai'i-Hilo 9-0
No. 5 HPU posted a clean sweep over the Vulcans of Hawai'i-Hilo on the Big Island on President's Day.
The sweep started with taking all three doubles matches. Hoynaski/Adam downed Daniela Sanz/Sara Marin 8-3 at No. 1, with Meccico/dos Santos outpacing Kinsey Volkart/Cheyenne Schula 8-1 at No. 2 and Kijasova/Greene beating Napapon Vorasane/Cara Fitzpatrick 8-4 at No. 3.
The singles were a very clean sheet, as No. 8 Hoynaski ripped Sanz 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 and Meccico did the same with Marin 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. At No. 3 Adam had no problem with Volkart 6-2, 6-0, while at No. 4 Kijasova defeated Schula 6-2, 6-1. The No. 5 match had dos Santos over Anne Carsey 6-1, 6-2, and the Sharks took No. 6 with Greene beating Vorasane 6-0, 6-2
