KAILUA, Hawai'i -- No. 1 Hawai'i Pacific University men's tennis team got through tough doubles matches, then went on to beat Hawai'i-Hilo 8-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Kailua Racquet Club.

The Sharks (8-4) needed extra games to win two of the three doubles points against the Vulcans (4-8).

The Vulcans came after the Sharks from the start. The UHH duo of Alex Fillat/Bruno Figlia roared through to beat HPU's
Torben Otto/
Jack Lyttle 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

But the Sharks wouldn't let their neighbor-island rivals collect any more.

HPU's No. 1 doubles team of
Filip Dolezel/
Jakub Hadrava won 9-7 over Stefan Coney/Vaclav Slezak, then the No. 3 duo of
Filip Soban/
Juan Erro got the same 9-7 triumph against Gregory Zukeran/Daniel Tada.

Bolstered by the early lead, HPU swept the six singles points.

Only one of the points went to a third set, and that was at No. 1 where 13th ranked Dolezel beat Slezak 6-7 (7-3), 6-3 and 14-12 in the tiebreak for the third set.

At No. 2, 34th ranked Otto beat Fillat 7-6, 6-0, while Hadrava beat Zukeran 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3. The Sharks took No. 4 with Gerrard Andres Rodriguez beat Coney 6-3, 6-2. At No. 5 Soban took down Figlia 6-3, 6-1, and at No. 6 Erro defeated Dillon Lam 6-2, 6-4.

The Sharks are in action on Friday at 11 a.m. when they host Colgate of the Division I Patriot League at the Kailua Racquet Club.
