No. 5 Sharks dominate Dominican 8-1

HONOLULU – No. 5 Hawai'i Pacific University kept its perfect season record intact on Saturday, beating Dominican (Calif.) 9-0.

The Sharks (4-0) swept doubles action and lost only a set and a tiebreaker in handing the loss to the Penguins (2-3).

The Sharks were paced by the play of senior Nicole Hoynaski of Sydney, Australia. The eighth-ranked singles player in NCAA Division II, Hoynaski made short work of her opponents in both singles and doubles, not losing a single game with the two positions. She shutout DUC's Rickimae Torres 6-0, 6-0  at No. 1 singles after teaming with junior Oceane Adam of LeMoule, Guadeloupe to rip DUC's Brooke Briseno/Skyler Schaar 8-0 at No. 1 doubles. Adam went on to beat Schaar at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-3.

HPU's No. 2 doubles squad of Lara Meccico/Leticia dos Santos beat Torres/Alex Wartenberg 8-4, while the No. 3 doubles team of Barbora Kijasova/Bianca Schulhof shutout Solveig Karlsen/Cori Beeby 8-0.

At the other singles positions, Kijasova beat Briseno 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3, dos Santos downed Wartenberg 6-1, 7-6 at No. 4, and Schulof defeated Karlsen 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5.

The Penguins only point came at No. 6 singles as HPU's Monica Greene fell to Beeby 3-6, 6-2, 8-10.

HPU travels to the East Coast for a swing that has them facing some of the toughest competition they will meet all season.  The Sharks meet defending NCAA Division II National Champion and top ranked Armstrong State on Tuesday at 8 a.m. HST (1 p.m. EST).
