No. 5 Sharks open Georgia trip with losses

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The No. 5 Hawai'i Pacific University women's tennis Sharks opened their spring break trip to Georgia on a disappointing not, dropping their first two matches at the Armstrong Tennis Complex.
 
The Sharks (4-2) fell to No. 3 Armstrong State 7-2 on Tuesday, then lost to No. 6 Barry (Fla.) 7-2 on Wednesday.
 
The Sharks have gotten all their points from the top singles players in both matches, as eighth ranked Nicole Hoynaski and Lara Meccico were winners on Tuesday and Wednesday.
 
Against Armstrong, Hoynaski beat 11th ranked Lena Lutzeier 3-6, 6-4, 10-4, while Meccico downed Paula Boixader Roca 6-2, 4-6, 10-3.
 
In the match versus Barry, Hoynaski downed 18th ranked Dasha Salnikova 6-2, 4-4, retired and Meccico downed Isa Rapisarda Calvo 6-1, 6-3.
 
The rest of the Sharks lineup against defending NCAA Division II National Champion Armstrong.
 
In singles, Oceane Adam fell to 30th ranked Tatjana Stoll 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, Barbora Kijasova lost to 13th ranked Diana Stomlega 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4, Leticia dos Santos bowed to Tamri Chalaganidze 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5, and Bianca Schulhof was defeated by Alice Patch 6-1, 6-1.
 
In doubles against the Pirates, HPU's Adam/Hoynaski lost to the second ranked team of Lutzeier/Stomlega 8-1 at No. 1, while Meccico/dos Santos dropped an 8-6 heart breaker to Chalaganidze/Patch at No. 2. Kijasova/Schulhof fell to Roca/Stoll 8-4 at No. 3.
 
The Barry match was much closer, but the Buccaneers came out on top.
 
HPU battled at No. 3 singles before Adam fell to Verena Schmid 6-4, 5-7, 10-4. Kijasova dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to 22nd ranked Sonja Larsen at No. 4, with dos Santos falling to Ana Pain 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 and Schulholf lost to Judith Bohnenkamp 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
 
In doubles against the Buccaneers, Hoynaski/Adam fell 8-5 to Pain/Larsen at No. 1, Meccico/dos Santos lost 8-5 to Zuza Mciejewska/Salnikova at No. 2 and Kijasova/Schulhof lost to Karina Goia/Calvo 8-2.
 
After a day off on Thursday, the Sharks are back at it on Friday in Savannah against 14th ranked Valdosta State.
