SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 5 Hawai'i Pacific University chalked up a 5-1 win over No. 17 Sonoma State as the Sharks opened with quarterfinal play in the PacWest Conference Tournament at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center.
The second seeded Sharks (12-4) used the top of the lineup to down the seventh seeded Seawolves (11-7) to advance to Friday's semifinal.
The trio of
Nicole Hoynaski,
Lara Meccico and
Oceane Adam accounted for all five points for the Sharks.
Hoynaski, the third ranked singles player in Division II, beat 11th ranked Jensyn Warren 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Meccico, ranked 19th, defeated Amanda Zuidema 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Adam, ranked 48th, downed Kaitlyn Haithcock 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles action, Meccico/
Barbora Kijasova defeated Warren/Jordyn Kearney 8-5 at No. 1, while the ninth ranked duo of Hoynaski/Adam shut out Hillary Fazekas/Katherine Long 8-0.
Sonoma State's only point came at No. 3 doubles where Amanda Zuidema/Jenna DeTurk defeated Leticia dos Santos/
Bianca Schulhof 8-1.
The other three singles matches were pulled off the courts when the team match was decided.
The Sharks face No. 11 Academy of Art in a key semifinal match. The two are second and third in the NCAA Division II West Region rankings and are meeting for the first time this season. First serve is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. HST (1:30 p.m. PDT).
