SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 5 Hawai'i Pacific University rolled to the championship match at the PacWest Conference Championships with a 5-1 semifinal win over No. 11 Academy of Art on Friday at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
The second seeded Sharks (13-4) once again used the top of the lineup to beat the Urban Knights (16-4) in the first meeting between the teams this season.
For the second consecutive day, the trio of
Nicole Hoynaski,
Lara Meccico and
Oceane Adam accounted for all five points for the Sharks.
Hoynaski, the third ranked singles player in Division II, beat Monika Stanikova 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Meccico, ranked 19th, defeated Annika Schneider 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Adam, ranked 48th, downed Klara Thell-Lenntorp 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles action, Meccico/
Barbora Kijasova upset 11th ranked Alma and Klara Thell-Lenntorp 8-4 at No. 1, as the ninth ranked duo of Hoynaski/Adam took down Schneider/Taisiia Andrieieva 8-2.
ArtU's sole point came at No. 3 doubles where Stanikova/Paula Alcantara defeated Leticia dos Santos/
Bianca Schulhof 8-2.
The other three singles matches were pulled off the courts when the team match was decided.
The Sharks advance to meet No. 1 BYU-Hawaii in the PacWest Conference Championship match. The top seeded, No. 1 ranked and unbeaten Seasiders (26-0) beat Cal State-LA 5-2 to reach the final. First serve is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. HST (1:30 p.m. PDT).
