IRVINE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University senior lefthander
Matthew Gunter was named the PacWest Conference Pitcher of the Year and is joined by junior teammate
Codi Santana on the 2017 All-PacWest Conference Baseball Teams announced on Monday morning by the conference office.
Gunter, the senior from Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista, was named PacWest Pitcher of the Year by the conference coaches and selected to the All-PacWest First Team. He went 6-4 with a 2.09 ERA, which ranked second among PacWest starting pitchers. He led the conference and ranked 13th in NCAA Division II with an HPU program record 102 strikeouts. He notched double-digit strikeouts in six games, including a career-high 12 against Holy Names. He threw five complete games and tossed a seven-inning no-hitter against Hawai'i Hilo. He is the second PacWest Pitcher of the Year from HPU joining Caelan O'Meara who earned the honor in 2010.
Gunter was twice named the PacWest Pitcher of the Week and was twice selected the NCBWA as the West Region Pitcher of the Week.
Santana, a junior Oxnard, Calif./St. Bonaventure HS, was voted designated hitter on the All-PacWest Third Team. Santana played in 46 of the Sharks' 50 games and led the team with a .312 batting average. He was second on the squad with 29 RBIs, and collected eight doubles, two triples and one home run.
The Sharks finished the season at 20-28-2 overall, 9-26-1 in the PacWest.
Joining Gunter as PacWest Baseball Special Award winners are Player of the Year Pablo O'Connor of Azusa Pacific, Defensive Player of the Year Tristen Alvarez of Fresno Pacific, Newcomer of the Year Garrett King of California Baptist, Freshman of the Year John Glenn of Cal Baptist and Coach of the Year Paul Svagdis of Azusa Pacific.
