HONOLULU – No. 5 Hawai'i Pacific University's
Oceane Adam came back from a 4-2 deficit in the third set to beat Klara Thell-Lenntorp 6-4 and lead the Sharks to a 5-3 victory over Academy of Art in the NCAA Division II Women's West Regional at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex Tuesday afternoon.
The Sharks (14-5) advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship Sweet 16 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The Urban Knights (16-5) season came to an end.
The Sharks held a 4-3 lead when No. 3 singles went to a third set. Adam had taken set one 6-2, with Thell-Lenntorp winning 6-0 in the second. Thell-Lenntorp built a 4-2 lead in the deciding set before Adam responded by breaking Thell-Lenntorp's serve twice on the way to winning four straight games and clinching the win for HPU.
The Sharks were led by the top of the lineup in advancing.
HPU's
Nicole Hoynaski, the No. 2 ranked singles player in Division II, ripped No. 48 Monika Stanikova 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Adam at No. 2 doubles to down Annika Schneider/Taisiia Andrieieva 8-4.
Lara Meccico, No. 16 nationally, blitzed Schneider at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-2, and with
Barbora Kijasova formed the 24th ranked doubles team that upset the eighth ranked team of twins Alma and Klara Thell-Lenntorp 8-0 at No. 1 doubles.
Academy of Art picked up three points at the bottom of the order. Stanikova/Paula Alcantara beat Leticia dos Santos/
Bianca Schulhof 9-7 at No. 3 doubles, Alma Thell-Lenntorp beat dos Santos 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and Alcantara defeated Schulhof 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
Only No. 4 singles was left unfinished as Kijasova had won set one 7-5 over Maria Andrisani, but was trailing 4-0 in the second set when pulled.
The Sharks will face No. 12 St. Mary's (Texas) in the Sweet 16 on Wednesday, May, 10 in Altamonte Springs, Fla., at 2 a.m. HST (8 a.m. EDT).
