Box Score 2 ALAMEDA, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University shutout Holy Names 8-0 in the first game, but saw the Hawk come-from-behind for to take game two 8-7 as the teams split a PacWest Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Pat Bail Field.
The Sharks (17-21, 11-19) kept the Hawks (7-32, 3-26) off the board in the first game, but allowed four unearned runs in the game two loss.
HPU was paced offensively by senior first baseman
Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle going 3-for-7 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored in the two game, while senior shortstop
Mitchell Bumann of Corona, Calif./Temescal Canyon was 3-for-8 with three RBIs and a run scored. Senior catcher
Kreston Woods of Tempe, Ariz./DeNiza was 2-for-5 with two RBIs playing only in the first game.
Junior righthander
Tyler Van Stone (4-5) of Henderson, Nev./Foothill got the win in game one, scattering three hits in six innings with four strikeouts. Senior righthander
Evan-Thomas May (0-1) of Buena Park, Calif./Oxford Academy pitched in both games, going a combined 3.1 innings allowing four hits and the winning run in the seventh of game two, while striking out a total of seven with a walk. Righthander
Evan Spitzer of Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge threw two innings in game one with a hit and a strikeout. Senior righthander Billy Clemens of Tempe, Ariz./Corona Del Sol, got a no decision in the second game, going 4.1 innings and charged with seven runs – only three earned – on nine hits with two walks and a strikeout.
The Sharks got the first game party started with four runs in the opening frame. Senior third baseman
Wyatt Hoppie of Orange, Calif./Villa Park rapped a two-.out double down the right field line and scored on Kapeliela's RBI single to left. After a walk, a wild pitch and a hit batsman to load the bases, junior leftfielder
Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis High, was the second hit batter in the inning and drove in a second run. Woods followed with a two-RBI single to left to give HPU the 4-0 lead.
HPU added single runs in the third, sixth and seven while holding the Hawks at bay.
Bumann posted an RBI single in the third, with senior pinch hitter
Froy Smith of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle added a sacrifice fly in the sixth and junior centerfielder
Tanner Tokunaga of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City ripped an RBI single to right in the seventh for the 7-0 score.
HNU starter Adrian Rodriguez took the loss, going only two-thirds of an inning and allowing four runs on three hits with a walk in facing five batters. Tyler Kanne came in for 2.1 innings, giving up a run on a hit with a strikeout, while Garrett O'Callaghan worked the final six inning allowing two runs on eight hits with a strikeout.
In the nightcap, HPU drew first blood when Kapeliela led off the second by sending a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right for his team-leading seventh home run of the season.
But the Hawks came back in the third with their first runs of the day. After getting two on base with two out, the Hawks scored when Jahshua Jones stole third and scored on a throwing error from junior catcher
Gabriel Garcia of Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian that allowed the second runner to third. Cameron Trudel's RBI single put HNU up 2-1 on the unearned runs.
HPU responded with five runs in the top of the fourth. With a Kapeliela one-out single and a walk to redshirt freshman designated hitter
Micah Layosa of Lihue, Hawai'i/Kauai, the Sharks moved up on a pair of wild pitches that scored Kapeliela. Then HPU got walks from sophomore infielder

Joe Morin of Upland, Calif./Upland to load the bases for Garcia's RBI walk for a 3-2 advantage. After a pitching change, Bumann followed with a two RBI single through the right side. Sophomore rightfielder
Ryan Torres-Torioka of Holualoa, Hawai'i/Konawaena walked to load the bases again when Hoppie drew an RBI walk to take the 6-2 lead.
The Hawks came back with three in the bottom of the fourth as the Sharks committed two errors and gave up a two RBI double to Jones and an RBI single to Colton Combs to pull back to within one at 6-5.
The Sharks made it a two-run lead in the top of fifth when Tokunaga drew a bases-loaded walk to go up 7-5, but HNU came back in the bottom of the inning with two more unearned runs on an error and an RBI single by Alex Denobriga to tie the game.
The game stayed tied until the bottom of the seventh. With two out, Denobriga doubled to left and pinch hitter William Ruiz followed with an RBI single to right center off of May to plate the walk-off run.
Josh Nelson (2-1) got the win in relief for the Hawks who used four pitchers in the outing, allowing just one hit while facing four batters. Starter Kyle Scott went 3.1 innings allowing six runs on four hits with four walks. Jimmy Doyle work two-thirds allowing one hit and two walks with a K, and Jeff Hill pitched two innings allowing a run on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
HPU and Holy Names meet again in a single game on Sunday at 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT), and wrap up the series on Monday with a 2 p.m. HST (5 p.m. PDT) contest.
