Sharks Close Season at NCAA II West Regional

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Hawai'i Pacific University completed the Cross Country season in the 2019 NCAA Division II West Regional on Saturday at the Ash Creek Preserve.
 
The HPU men finished 26th out of 28 teams with 653 points, bettering 27th place Concordia Portland with 784 points. The Sharks were just behind Azusa Pacific with 636 points in 25th. The HPU women ran a pair of individuals and did not have a team score.
 
In the women's 6-kilometer race, junior Robyn Kaltenbrunn of Johannesburg, South Africa, clocked a 21:51.1 for 41st place. She was the sixth PacWest runner across the line. Sophomore Karen Corona Perez of Ocracoke, N.C., placed 111th overall in a time of 22:41.9.
 
As he has all season, senior Lukas Motschmann of Magdeburg, Germany, led the Sharks. He covered the 10-kilometer championship course in 31:16.4. Freshman Jona Bodirsky of Muhlhausen, Germany, was second across the line in 33:07.5 for 137th, just ahead of sophomore David Rutto of Eldoret, Kenya, at 33:14.7 in 141st. Senior Christian Duran of Whittier, Calif./La Serna, placed 160th with a time of 33:42.7, and junior Jason Flores of Beaumont, Calif./Beaumont, ran 175th in 34:29.6.
 
Chico State took the women's team title with 75 points, Northwest Nazarene was second with 134 and Cal State East Bay third with 142 points. PacWest Conference Champion Fresno Pacific placed 12th with 334 points.
 
Alaska Anchorage's Emmanuelah Chelimo won the individual title in a time of 20:22.4, with Seattle Pacific's Dania Holmberg second in 20:49.5 and Simon Fraser's Olivia Willett third in 20:51.6.
 
Chico State also won the men's team championship with 43 points, well ahead of second place Cal Poly Pomona with 115 points and Cal State San Marco third with 121 points. PacWest Champion Biola was sixth with 167 points.
 
Cal State San Marco's Josh Litwiller won the men's race in 29:54.4, ahead of Chico State's Trad Berti at 29:56.7. UC San Diego's Aren Johnson was third at 29:57.4 and Biola's Gabe Plendcio was fourth in 30:01.2.
 
The top three teams automatically qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships on Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Arcade Creek Cross Country Course in Sacramento, Calif.
