IRVINE, Calif. –Hawai'i Pacific University's
Starr Rivera has been selected the PacWest Conference Women's Basketball Defender of the Week by the conference office on Monday.
Rivera, a 5-5 senior from Honolulu/Roosevelt, led Sharks (8-1, 3-0) to a pair of road victories in the Bay Area last week.
She averaged a team-leading 16.0 points for the week, with 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.5 steals, while shooting 42.3 percent from the floor (11-of-26), 3-of-8 from the 3-point arc (37.5 percent) and 7-of-7 from the foul line. She scored 18 points with four rebounds, two steals and two assists in the 87-34 win over Holy Names. Scored 14 points to lead HPU in the 59-48 win at Notre Dame de Namur, with five rebounds and three steals.
Rivera is averaging 15.1 points a game on the season, second on the team and 10th in the PacWest, and is hitting 50.0 percent (16-of-32) from the 3-point arc and ranks 10th in the league with 1.8 3-pointers per game.
Joining Rivera with the women's weekly honors are Chaminade's Destiny Castro as PacWest Player of the Week and Fresno Pacific's Felicia Dourva as PacWest Freshman of the Week.
The Sharks face Dominican on Monday evening on the road. HPU then comes home to play Hope International on Friday in a game designated as an exhibition contest for both teams. Tipoff is slated for 4:30 p.m. at The Shark Tank.
