IRVINE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University rightfielder
Sean Coffey has been chosen the first PacWest Conference Baseball Player of the Week for his performance in the season opening series against Howard Payne this weekend.
Coffey, a 6-0 junior from Boise, Idaho/Centennial via Walla Walla Community College, recorded nine hits in leading the Sharks to a 5-0 series sweep over the Yellowjackets. He hit .450 for the weekend, with a .650 slugging percentage as he belted four doubles and recorded four RBIs and a stolen base.
HPU's 5-0 start is the best start to a season since 2016 when the Sharks won 30 games.
Joining Coffey in winning PacWest awards for the season-opening week are Zack Noll of Point Loma as Pitcher of the Week and third baseman Otto Kemp of Point Loma as Freshman of the Week.
The Sharks visit the Big Island this weekend for a five-game series against Hawai'i Hilo. Friday's doubleheader opens PacWest Conference play, while Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game are designated non-conference contests. The doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday start at 3 p.m., while Sunday's single game is at 2 p.m.
