INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Back-to-Back PacWest Conference Tournament Champion Hawai'i Pacific University drew the No. 6 seed in the West Region as the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship field was announced Sunday evening.
The Sharks (23-8, 18-4) won an automatic berth to the championship with their 75-68 victory over Azusa Pacific in the PacWest Conference Tournament on Saturday. HPU meets No. 5 Alaska Anchorage (28-2, 19-10) in the quarterfinals, the No. 3 seed who lost in the championship game of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament to Northwest Nazarene 70-64. Earlier this season, HPU fell to the Seawolves in Anchorage 65-54 on Nov. 24.
The PacWest Conference received three selections. Regular season champion No. 23 Azusa Pacific (25-5) drew the No. 4 seed and faces No. 5 seed Cal Poly Pomona (25-5) in quarterfinal action. Dominican (Calif.) (21-6), who fell to the Sharks in the PacWest semifinals 84-66, made the tournament at the eighth seed and will play host, top seed and No. 2 UC San Diego (29-0) in the quarters.
The fourth quarterfinal game has No. 9 Northwest Nazarene, the second seed, against seventh seeded Humboldt State (Calif.) (19-7).
The NCAA Division II Women's West Regional is set for quarterfinal action on Friday, semifinal play on Saturday and the championship game on Monday, Feb. 18 at UCSD's RIMAC Arena in La Jolla, Calif. Tipoff times and ticket information will be announced soon.
