IRVINE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University senior
Christian Kapeliela heads up the Sharks chosen to the 2019 All-PacWest Conference Baseball Team announced on Tuesday by the conference office.
Kapeliela earned his second consecutive First Team All-PacWest honor at first base, with while senior leftfielder
Jordan Mopas was chosen Second Team and senior centerfielder
Tanner Tokunaga was voted Third Team.
The seniors helped the Sharks to a 22-27 overall record, 9-22 in the PacWest Conference.
Kapeliela, the 6-0 senior from Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle, set the HPU single season record with 72 hits in 2019, and finished the season third in the PacWest and 51st in NCAA Division II. He led the Sharks with a .383 batting average, third in the PacWest and 82nd in Division II, and led HPU with .992 fielding percentage, with just 3 errors on 382 chances, best in PacWest for more than 300 chances. The first baseman was also voted 2019 Shark of the Year and Senior of the Year for the HPU Athletic Department.
Mopas, a 5-9 senior from Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis School, led the Sharks and was fifth in PacWest with a .623 slugging percentage. He hit 10 home runs to rank fourth in PacWest and 114 nationally as he tied for second on HPU single-season homer list. Mopas NCBWA West Region Player of the Week when he hit three HRs in four at-bats against Biola, including a grand slam and 3-run shot in back-to-back plate appearances. He also led the Sharks with 14 doubles, third in the conference, and led the PacWest and ranked fourth nationally with eight sacrifice flies. He was second on the team with a .983 fielding percentage with just one error in 60 chances in left, and had three outfield assists – twice gunning down runners at the plate.
Tokunaga, a 5-7 senior from Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City, set a new HPU record with 722 career at-bats while starting in all 189 games he played for the Sharks. He was fourth on the 2019 team with a .347 batting average, his best season at HPU. He led the Pac West and ranked 62nd in Division II with 21 stolen bases, finishing his career third all-time at HPU with 67 career steals. He finished his HPU career with 209 hits, fourth all-time. He sported a .977 fielding percentage as a senior in centerfield with just three errors in 131 chances and four outfield assists.
Outfielder Cole Kleszcz of conference champion Azusa Pacific was named the PacWest Player of the Year, with Point Loma's Zack Noll the PacWest Pitcher of the Year and Concordia Irvine shortstop Haloa Dudoit the Defensive Player of the Year. Keszcz was tabbed the Newcomer of the Year and APU's Tido Robles the Freshman of the Year. Paul Svagdis of APU was honored as the Coach of the Year.
