FULLERTON, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University junior
Robyn Kaltenbrunn placed fourth in the women's race and senior
Lukas Motschmann ran 24th in the men's competition at the Biola Cross Country Invitational Saturday at Ted Craig Park.
Kaltenbrunn, from Johannesburg, South Africa, ran the women's 5-kilometer course in 18:29.50 to finish fourth. She was 32 seconds off the winning time of 17:57.25 of Bryn McKellop, the 2017 NCAA Division III runner-up who ran as a member of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Alumni team.
Motschmann of Magdeburg, Germany, led HPU in covering the men's 8-kilometer course in 26:02.54 for 24th. The race was won by Biola's Gabe Plendcio in 25:16.02.
Kaltenbrunn was the second Division II runner across the line, as Point Loma's Zita Molnar placed second 15 seconds ahead of Kaltenbrunn in 18:14.47.
Kaltenbrunn was well ahead of the rest of the HPU runners, with senior
Brooke Gottmeier of Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley the second Shark coming in 100th in 20:08.23. Senior Jasmine Napenas of Wheatland, Calif./Wheatland Union clocking 20:29.18 in 113th. Sophomore Karen Corona Perez of Ocracoke, N.C. was 115th in 20:31.91, with freshman
McKay Guckenberg of Eureka, Mont./Lincoln County 121st in 20:26.75. Senior
Janice Hata of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle posted a 21:22.30 in 153rd.
HPU scored 353 points to place 14th among the 22 teams competing. Cal State San Bernadino was 13th with 315 points, with Ventura CC 15th scoring 444 points.
Cal State San Marcos won the women's team competition with 85 points, with UC San Diego second with 110 points and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps third with 137.
On the men's side, Motschmann was seventh spots ahead of the next Sharks runner. Freshman
Jona Bodirsky of Muhlhausen, Germany placed 31st in 26:15.78. Senior transfer
Christian Duran of Whittier, Calif./LaSerna via Mount Olive, ran 77th in 27:22.59, with sophomore
David Rutto of Eldoret, Kenya 103rd in 28:01.71. Junior
Jason Flores of Beaumont, Calif./Beaumont, finished the scoring with a 29:01.60 for 136th.
HPU placed ninth with 260 points to defeat NCAA Division I Loyola Marymount by 28 points with 288 in 10th. Fresno Pacific was eighth with 247 points.
Cal State San Marcos won the men's title scoring 42 points, beating host Biola who collected 53 points in second despite taking the top two spots. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps finished third with 57 points.
The Sharks will spend the week on the mainland training before running in the UC Riverside Invitational next Saturday.
