MONMOUTH, Ore. – Hawai'i Pacific University sophomore
Amy Baum was named the West Region Player of the Year and senior
Starr Rivera was selected to the All-West Region First Team with the announcement of the 2018 Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Women's All-West Region Team.
The dynamic duo led the No. 3 Sharks to a school record 29-1 season with a 25-game winning streak that included the Sharks third straight PacWest Conference Tournament Championship.
Baum, a 5-7 sophomore guard from Melbourne, Australia/Rowville Secondary, was chosen the Regional Player of the Year in for her outstanding season. The 2020 PacWest Conference Player of the Year, Baum was also chosen to the All-PacWest Conference Tournament Team.
Baum recorded the first triple-double in women's school history with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 15 assists against Dominican, tying the HPU record for single game assists. She recorded five other "near" triples, and seven double-doubles on the season. Baum averages 12.3 points a game, leads PacWest and is fourth nationally with 6.0 assists per game, and ranks sixth in PacWest and 103rd nationally with 8.2 rebounds per game. She leads the conference and is third nationally in assist/turnover ratio at 2.92. The sophomore already holds the HPU record for career assists with 337, and ranks fifth in career rebounds with 458, sixth in career steals with 100 and 12th in career scoring with 670.
Rivera, a 5-5 senior guard from Honolulu/Roosevelt, adds All-West Region First Team to the PacWest Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player and All-PacWest First Team honors this year.
Rivera leads the Sharks and is the fourth leading scorer in PacWest, 47th nationally, with 18.1 points per game. She leads PacWest and is ninth nationally with a 44.9 3-point field goal percentage, and is third in PacWest, 37th nationally, with 2.67 3-point field goals per game. Rivera averages 3.1 assists per game (11th PacWest, 214th nationally), and tied the HPU school record with eight 3-pointers at Point Loma. She set the HPU record with 80 3-point field goals in 2019-20. She is a rugged competitor, leading the PacWest and ranked 10th nationally in minutes played, logging 1090:40 of time on the court. Rivera ranks fourth in HPU career 3-point field goals with 134, eighth in career scoring with 894 points and eighth in career field goals with 339.
Baum and Rivera will advance to the D2CCA All-America ballot, with Baum advancing to the ballot for the Ron Lenz D2CCA Player of the Year.
Voting was conducted by the NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors from West Region institutions and conference offices. The Division II Conference Commissioners Association encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of higher education. The CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact Division II intercollegiate athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities.
