IRVINE, Calif. –Hawai'i Pacific University pitcher/catcher
Tyler DeYoung was named the PacWest Baseball Freshman of the Week for his outstanding play this week.
The Sharks faced a big challenge in the first series of the season facing NCAA Division I opponent University of Hawai`i in a four-game series. However, the performance by HPU freshman DeYoung was a big bright spot as the Sharks prepare for the conference season. The 6-0 righthander from Canyon Country, Calif., pitched 2.2 innings in relief and didn't allow any runs or hits, while recording four strikeouts. The only base runner he allowed in nine batters faced was on a walk. He also recorded a single as the starting catcher in Saturday's game against the Rainbow Warriors.
DeYoung is joined this week by PacWest Player of the Week Adam Inouye of Academy of Art and PacWest Pitcher of the Week Matthew Sanchez of Academy of Art.
The Sharks (0-4) are idle this week and resume play on Saturday, March 20, when they visit the Big Island to take on Hawai'i Hilo in the first of two weekend doubleheaders.
