IRVINE, Calif. – Sophomore
Richard Higa was the only selection for Hawai'i Pacific University on the 2021 All-PacWest Conference Baseball Team announced Tuesday by the conference office.
A 6-0 sophomore second baseman from Honolulu/University Lab was named to the All-PacWest Third Team by the conference coaches, and was HPU's lone selection to the team.
Higa led HPU with a .367 batting average and a .533 slugging percentage as he started 16 of the 20 game he played for the Sharks in 2021. He led HPU and the PacWest Conference with four triples, ranking 29th nationally and led the conference and was seventh nationally in triples per game at 0.19. He also recorded two doubles on the season.
The All-PacWest Conference Special Awards announced at the same time, with Azusa Pacific's Osvaldo Tovalin named PacWest Player of the Year and APU's A.J. Woodall the PacWest Pitcher of the Year. Concordia Irvine's Haloa Dudoit was chosen the PacWest Defensive Player of the Year, while CUI's Evan Larsen was the PacWest Newcomer of the Year. Point Loma's Otto Kemp was selected the PacWest Freshman of the Year. Azusa Pacific's Paul Svagdis was honored as the PacWest Coach of the Year.
The Sharks finished the season at 9-17 overall, 9-13 in PacWest Conference Hawai'i action, and won seven of their last nine games to close the season.
