HONOLULU – No. 5 Hawai'i Pacific University put up a great battle, but No. 3 Oregon edged HPU 275.285-to-271.865 on Saturday night at The Shark Tank.
The Sharks wished A Hui Hou to four of their senior teammates in the final home meet of the year with a grandeur ceremony of leis and photos among teammates, coaches and parents.
The Sharks (0-4) struggled against the Ducks (1-2) finding the top only in the Acro Event as a result of an Oregon faulter in the Seven-Element Heat.
HPU tied with UO in two heats of the opening Compulsory Event putting up scores of 9.75 and 8.60 respectively. They finished the event down 37.60-36.85.
The Sharks pulled ahead 65.10-64.40 after the Acro Event winning the 7-Element with a score of 9.30 compared to Oregon's 7.60.
HPU put up impressive 9.85 scores in both the Inversion and Synchronized heats of the Pyramid Event, but it couldn't match the Duck's 9.95 and 9.90 respective scores. Overall in the event they only saw 0.25 in total deductions which was undoubtedly impressive.
At halftime, the Sharks trailed just 93.25-94.15. Unfortunately a UO athlete suffered an injury during the intermission and had to alter its roster for a few events.
The Sharks found themselves on top for two more heats in the Toss Event but still fell just short for the event total and trailed 120.95-122.05, a 2.10 point differential.
The Ducks pulled away in the Tumbling Event winning five of the six heats including a near perfect 9.925 in the Open heat.
UO had to lower their start value for Team Event due to the injury to 106.06 compared to HPU's 104.69 total possible.
After the dust settled, the Ducks arose with a 95.910 compared to the Sharks' 94.990.
In comparing all the events, the Sharks received 20.08 points in deductions throughout the meet compared to the Duck's 18.48
