WACO, Texas – No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific University closed out the regular season on Saturday, falling to defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Baylor 279.775-255.395 at the Ferrell Center.
The Sharks (1-5) had a roller coaster of a ride with highs and low throughout the meet but couldn't keep up with the near perfect pace of the undefeated Bears (7-0) on the BU senior night.
An early setback in the Compulsory Event was hard to recover from eventually falling 35.35 to BU's 38.85 out of 40.00 possible points in the event.
The Sharks did find themselves on top of the 5-Element heat of the Acro Event with sophomores
Zoe Montano and
Devyn Golden, junior
Avery Tyson, and senior
Amanda Dees putting up a 9.40 over Baylor's 8.85.
HPU stayed strong through the Pyramid event, but BU posted both a 9.95 and a perfect 10.00 in the Inversion and Open heats respectively.
Going into halftime the Sharks trailed 91.95-97.05.
After the intermission, HPU struggled to keep up with Baylor's starting difficulty values coming close in the Open heat of the Toss with a 9.45. The Bear's came right back with an almost perfect 9.95 closing out the event 28.90-26.60.
The Sharks did find themselves back on top of the Aerial heat of the Acro Event as sophomore
Ravenna Bala put up a 9.425 compared to BU's 9.325. However, it wasn't enough to trump the event with the Bear's outscoring the Sharks 57.175-52.325.
Coming down to the Team event, the Bears scored more than 10 points above HPU finalizing the meet at 279.775-255.395.
In comparing all the events, the Sharks suffered 35.88 points in deductions compared to Baylor's 18.43 in deductions.
With their regular season concluded, the Sharks now have to play the waiting game. The eight-team NCATA National Championship field will be announced on Monday, April 11. HPU is currently seventh and will make the field if they hold the position. The NCATA National Championships are April 28-30 at Oregon's Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene.
