Sharks Battle Sacramento State in Home Opener

Honolulu, Hawai'i  — Hawai'i Pacific Women's Tennis opened its 2026 spring campaign at home on Tuesday morning, hosting Division I Sacramento State of the Big Sky Conference. The Sharks competed through tight stretches across both singles and doubles before ultimately falling 7–0 to the Hornets in their season debut.

Sacramento State secured the doubles point with wins on all three courts, taking the opening matches at No. 3 and No. 2 before closing out the point on Court 1.

In singles play, the Sharks showed strong early-season resilience. Carmelle Walker put together HPU's most competitive match of the day at the top court, rallying with a dominant 6–0 second set to force a third before narrowly falling 6–4. Claudia Maldonado Gutierrez and Polina Saulevich battled deep into their second sets, each forcing tiebreak moments before the Hornets closed out the matches.

The Sharks move to 0–1 to start the year and now turn their attention toward their upcoming nonconference slate as they continue building toward PacWest play.
