HPU Softball Drops Pair of One-Run Games at Azusa Pacific

AZUSA, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific dropped both games of a doubleheader to Azusa Pacific on Friday, falling 4-3 in nine innings in game one and 5-4 in game two.

Game one was a back-and-forth battle that extended into extra innings. HPU struck first in the opening inning on a sacrifice fly by Miquela Leopoldo before Azusa Pacific answered with two runs in the bottom half.

The Sharks evened the score in the third on an RBI single from Leopoldo and later took a 3-2 lead in the seventh when Taryn Hirano doubled to bring in Alexis Oshiro.

Azusa Pacific tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and walked it off in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk.

Hirano led the Sharks at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Leopoldo added two RBIs, while Makayla Pagampao recorded a double.

In the circle, Trinity Williams threw 8.0 innings, allowing three runs, one earned, before Angelica Oseguera was charged with the loss in relief.

In game two, Hawai'i Pacific again jumped out early, scoring in the first inning on an RBI single from Leopoldo and adding another run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Jade Retuta.

Azusa Pacific responded with two runs in the second to tie the game and later took the lead with a three-run sixth inning.

HPU mounted a late rally in the seventh as Hirano tripled to drive in a run and Leopoldo followed with an RBI double, but the Sharks came up just short.

Leopoldo led the Sharks with two hits and two RBIs, while Hirano added two hits, including a triple and an RBI. Retuta contributed a hit and an RBI.

Naomi Cummings started in the circle, allowing two runs over two innings, while Lily Pardini took the loss after allowing three runs over four innings in relief.
