Sharks Fall to Lumberjacks at Waipio

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific hosted Cal Poly Humboldt on Wednesday morning at Waipio Soccer Complex, and after 90 minutes, the Lumberjacks took a 3-0 win over the Sharks.

Cal Poly Humboldt opened the scoring in the third minute when Sari Murphy scored, unassisted. The Sharks answered with an early chance of their own in the fourth minute, when Lavinia Vaipulu forced a save from Lumberjacks goalkeeper Ariana Beddoes. Lisette Almanza tested Beddoes again in the 29th minute, but the shot was saved as Cal Poly Humboldt doubled its lead in the 31st minute on a goal from Lucy Al-Chokhachy to make it 2-0. HPU goalkeeper Natalie Navarro made four saves in the first half.

Hawai'i Pacific continued to create chances in the second half, with shots from Christina Espinal in the 74th minute and Lauren Longworth in the 33rd and 80th minutes. Azjah Tocher, who took over in goal for the Sharks to start the second half, made two saves. The Lumberjacks closed out the scoring in the 70th minute when Hayden Anderson scored off an assist from Bre Mello to make it 3-0.

Hawai'i Pacific finished with seven shots, including two on goal. Cal Poly Humboldt out-shot the Sharks 16-7 overall, with a 9-2 edge in shots on goal.

The Sharks were whistled for four fouls to the Lumberjacks' 10, while Cal Poly Humboldt held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

Hawai'i Pacific heads to California for its next two matches, facing Menlo College on Friday, Sept. 4, at 12:00 p.m. in Atherton, before taking on Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 11:00 a.m. in Monterey.
