Yony Avelar is a midfielder from Salinas, California. A standout at Alisal High School under coach Mark Cisneros, Yony earned All-League MVP and helped guide his team to league titles and multiple CCS finals appearances. He also shined at Hartnell Community College, where he became a freshman captain, earned First Team All-League, and was recognized as an All-State Scholar under coach Daniel Ortega. Born in South Dakota, Yony chose HPU for the opportunity to grow both as an athlete and person in a new environment.
Off the field, Yony enjoys mountain biking, running, swimming, hiking, and spending time at the gym. His favorite foods include pasta, pupusas, and chicken and rice. He looks up to athletes like Lionel Messi, Stephen Curry, Canelo Álvarez, and Sergio “Checo” Pérez. In 10 years, Yony hopes to serve in law enforcement, giving back to and protecting his hometown community.
