Baseball Splits With Vulcans

HILO, HI (April 16, 2011) – In a PacWest doubleheader Hawai'i Pacific won the first game 9-7, but dropped the second game 11-2. Senior Les Akeo collected six hits and four RBI in the doubleheader to pace the Sea Warriors who fell to 17-18 overall and 14-10 in the PacWest. HPU trails by one game in the loss column in the race for the conference crown.

HPU broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning putting five runs on the board. The Sea Warriors batted around highlight by a two RBI single from Akeo and RBI by Jordan Oshiro and Rylan Morihara. HPU scored runs in the next two innings on RBI hits from Akeo and Max Newman to lead 7-2 after six innings. Hilo would battle back scoring five times in the last three innings. However, HPU's two-run eight inning would be the difference.

Bobby Jackson got his first save of his HPU career by recording the last two outs of the game. Starter Brent Queen got the win, pitching seven innings and giving up six runs, Queen is now 5-2. Akeo was 3-5 with three RBI and a run scored to lead the offense. Morihara had two hits with a run scored and a RBI. Nine different Sea Warriors collected hits.

In game two, the Vulcans scored six runs in the first inning to put HPU in a hole they could not recover from. Starter Peter Ibanez only recorded one out while giving up six runs, the defense didn't help by committing two errors in the inning. After back-to-back RBI hits from Akeo and Blake Amaral, HPU cut the lead to 6-3 in the third inning but that is as close as it would get.

Akeo again had three hits with an RBI and a run scored. Joshua Kaiwi pitched two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.

The teams will play a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday in Hilo at noon.
