Sumner Gets Walk-Off Hit, HPU Splits

Waipahu, HI (April 24, 2011) – Kale Sumner broke a four all tie in the bottom of the ninth inning with a base hit with the bases loaded to lift Hawai'i Pacific over UH-Hilo 5-4 in game one of a PacWest baseball doubleheader. HPU's comeback bid in game two was stopped and lost 6-5.

UH-Hilo took an early 3-0 lead into the third inning in game one, but HPU got back into the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Rylan Morihara doubled home Max Newman and then later scored on a sacrifice fly by Sumner. The Vulcans added a run in the fourth making it a 4-2 game. Neither team could score over the next four innings, setting the stage for the bottom of the ninth. David Greenstein started the inning by being hit by a pitch, Lanan Rice-Kashima singled and Newman then bunted the runners to second and third. Morihara scored Greenstein on a groundout, and then with two-outs Wade Tamaru singled home the tying run. Tamaru moved to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a passed ball. After a pair of walks, Kale Sumner delivered the game winner to left field.

Blake Amaral's school record hitting streak was stopped at 26 games. He was intentionally walked twice in the game. Chad Bolibol led the team going 3-3 at the plate, Sumner added two hits. Brent Queen moved to 6-2 on the season with the complete game win. He surrendered nine hits and four runs while striking out six.

In game two HPU also fell behind early. With the Sea Warrriors down 5-0 after the top of the second inning, the bats got to work. RBI by Jordan Inamasu and Morihara cut the lead to 5-2. Bolibol knocked in another run in the fourth and Inamasu scored on an error to make it a one run game. HPU would tie the game in the fifth inning on a Jordan Oshiro RBI single. UH-Hilo added a run in the sixth inning that would prove to be the difference.

Morihara, Bolibol and Oshiro each had two hits for HPU. Peter Ibanez got the loss in relief, allowing one run in five and a third innings.

The teams will play a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow at Hans L'Orange Field starting at noon.
