Huge Weekend for Sea Warriors

Honolulu, HI (April 29, 2011) – Three spring sports have pivotal match-ups at home this weekend with PacWest and national implications on the line. HPU is currently in 3rd place in the PacWest Commissioner's Cup standings with two sports remaining, but could clinch this weekend. Softball plays for a PacWest Championship and women's tennis begins its quest for a title, hosting the NCAA West Regional.

On Friday the baseball team (22-21, 16-12) can clinch second place in the PacWest with a win over Academy of Art (6-35, 6-18) at 6 P.M. at Hans L'Orange Field. A second place finish from the baseball team would loom large as the final PacWest Commissioner's Cup are calculated. Any one win in the four game conference set would clinch second place, HPU will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 P.M. and one conference game on Sunday at noon. Sunday's second game will be non-conference. After Sunday's games seniors Michael Greene, Toby Inouye, Lester Akeo, Sergio Contreras, and Micah Takahashi will be honored.

On Saturday at 1 P.M. the softball team (35-10, 21-5) can win the PacWest title with a sweep of UH-Hilo (26-12, 19-5). HPU is currently second in the region and would make a strong case to host the sub-regional with wins. The fifteenth-ranked Sea Warriors will celebrate seniors Kozy Toriano, Tajia Acierto, Ashley Valine and Laine Shikuma.

On Sunday, HPU's regionally second-ranked women's tennis team will take on the third-ranked Grand Canyon University at 3 P.M at Central Oahu Regional Park. A win by the Sea Warriors would advance them to the round of 16 and the national tournament in Altamonte Springs, FL. HPU is 2-0 against Grand Canyon this season, once in Phoenix and once on a neutral court. Seniors Aleksandra Stankovic and Sandra Wikstrom will be playing in their final home match.
