Phoenix, AZ (January 24, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific men's basketball team played a good first half, but couldn't put together a full 40 minutes of basketball as it lost 70-57 Tuesday in Phoenix. HPU is now 7-9 overall and 2-6 in the PacWest.
The first half was a seesaw affair with both teams trading baskets. There were seven first half ties, the last was broken by a
Kyle Allen free throw with: 50 left that gave HPU a 31-30 lead at halftime. The second half began like the first half, back and forth. However, the game's ninth tie would be the last. HPU fell behind 42-40 with 9:50 left and the Sea Warriors would not regain the lead. The deficit was only three at 50-47 with 5:33 to play, but a 10-1 run essentially ended things.
Allen led the team with 14 points and seven rebounds.
LaBrent Chappell chipped in 11 points, including two three-pointers.
GCU is now 10-5 and 4-3, the 'Lopes were led by Kyle Speed's 18 points.
HPU will regroup with a three game home stand, beginning on Monday against California Baptist. The tipoff is scheduled for 7 PM at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
