Women’s Soccer Comes From Behind in Tie

Kaneohe, HI (October 20, 2012) - The Hawai'i Pacific (5-7-2, 4-4-2) women's soccer team scored two goals in the final seven minutes to reverse a two goal deficit, earning a hard fought tie in double overtime against BYU-Hawai'i (5-3-2, 7-4-2) by the score of 2-2. Senior midfielder Sanoe Souza scored a goal while Kiana Kaiwi made four saves for the Sea Warriors.

The first half was largely a defensive struggle as both teams combined for five shots with HPU holding the 3-2 advantage. The Seasiders would get on the board in the 25th minute however, when Mackenzie Kirts sent a shot from just outside the 18 yard box over an outstretched Kaiwi giving BYU-H a 1-0 lead. The Seasiders would hold the one goal lead to the half.

HPU's prospects for victory appeared to take a major blow in the 74th minute when the Seasiders headed in a free kick to extend their lead to 2-0. Victims of few last second, heartbreaking, defeats this season, the never say die Sea Warriors turned the tables and responded with a major shift in momentum in when Souza picked up a loose ball and beat the Seasider keeper who came out of her net to challenge the shot. The Sea Warriors tied the game less than two minutes later when Breanna Gaddis sent a header towards net that deflected off the crossbar and on to a BYU defender who put the ball in to her own net for an own goal. With the score tied at two the teams headed in to overtime.

In the overtime periods an energized Atherton Field crowd wasn't enough to inspire yet another goal as the Seasiders outshot HPU 6-1. Kaiwi made two of her four stops in the extra periods.

After the match a proud head coach Gina Brewer commented on her team's comeback bid, “I am extremely happy with our ability to battle and how we never gave up and fought to the end today.  We came back from being down 2-0 showing our team's resiliency and strong character. I am very proud of them; it was a total team effort.”

The Sea Warriors look to extend their three-match unbeaten streak against the University of Hawaii at Hilo, in Hilo on October 22nd; game time is scheduled for 3 PM.
