Oakland, CA (October 24, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific women's volleyball team (12-7, 6-5) swept its third consecutive match and won its fifth in a row on Wednesday in Oakland by beating Holy Names (10-12, 7-4) 25-22, 25-19, and 25-22.
The Sea Warriors jumped out early in set one with a 9-2 lead and never looked back, holding at least a four-point lead for the rest of the set. “We did a fantastic job minimizing our errors in game one which helped with our momentum for the match,” said head coach
Daryl Kapis.
HPU trailed at 12-10 early in the second set, but an 8-0 run would put the green and blue back in control. HPU would lead 20-13 before closing out the set.
The third set was back and forth and would be tied at 20 before HPU finished off the match. Up 24-22, HPU got a block from
Haley Doerfler and
Elizabeth Culpepper to win it.
Doerfler hit an astronomical .818 by registering nine kills on 11 swings with no errors. Senior
Sanoe Recca added eight kills in the win.
Pihanakealoha Kea again had a double-double with 31 assists and 15 digs.
Amanda Moriarty had 19 digs as
Kara Wong had 12 and
Chelsey Buyuan had 10.
Injuries are playing a factor on HPU's current West Coast swing, but HPU is 2-0 due to good depth. Tonight Culpepper, who normally plays middle blocker, replaced an injured
Kasey Thompson on the right side. She did a “fantastic job,” according Kapis, with eight kills and a .389 hitting percentage.
HPU will head to San Francisco tomorrow to play Academy of Art at 7 PM PST.
