Box Score HONOLULU, HI (October 12, 2013) – Conventional wisdom says that when close geographic rivals meet, the stats and records can be thrown out the window. The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team entered Saturday's matchup eight games over .500 and Chaminade came in at three games under the .500 mark. However, the match was hard fought with HPU (13-4, 7-2) winning in four sets (23-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19).
Chaminade (5-9, 2-7) brought emotion and intensity in the pregame warm-ups and carried it over to the first set. HPU led 12-9 midway through the set, but a 5-0 CUH run put HPU down 14-12. HPU retied the set at 16, but another 4-0 CUH run put HPU in a hole. HPU was down 24-20, but reeled off three consecutive points, including a kill from
Elizabeth Culpepper. However, the comeback fell short.
HPU came out with a vengeance in the second set.
Amanda Moriarty, leading the PacWest in aces per set, served tough to open the second set and stake HPU to a 5-0 lead. Â The Sea Warriors continued to pour it on, leading 14-7 and then 22-11. Chaminde mounted a comeback to make the score more respectable, but HPU made a firm statement in the second set.
HPU jumped out in front 8-3 early in the third set, but soon the 'Swords tied the match at 10. After falling behind 11-10, HPU went on a 5-0 spurt to take a 15-11 lead. The lead would shrink to two at 20-18, but HPU scored the next four points to essentially end the set.
Chaminde led for most of the fourth set, including at 15-14. A four-point run, punctuated by two kills from
Pomai Recca, put HPU in the driver's seat. CUH didn't quit and made it a two point set at 20-18. However, HPU took five of the next six points to win the match.
"We did an amazing job in serve receive which allowed us to stop many Chaminade runs," said HPU Head Coach
Daryl Kapis.
HPU swept the season series from Chaminade and is now 5-0 against teams from Hawai'i in 2013.
The Columbia Blue and Kelly Green has now beaten the 'Swords 13 consecutive times. The last misstep against CUH came over five years ago on September 18, 2008.
Recca led the offense with a game-high 16 kills while hitting a robust .484. Culpepper wasn't far behind with 13 kills with a .458 hitting percentage.
Samantha Rummans added 12 kills.
Marie Fujii led all competitors with 26 assists.
Hannah Schuett, while celebrating a birthday, had 18 assists.
Chelsey Buyuan recorded a team-high 18 digs. Recca notched another double-double by contributing 13 digs.
HPU next will host California Baptist on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at St. Andrew's Priory.
