Box Score KANEOHE, HI (October 14, 2013)—For the second time this season the Hawai`i Pacific Men's Soccer Team (6-3-2) broke out for five goals in a match, this time dropping Pacific West Conference leader Fresno Pacific (7-3-1) 5-1 at Atherton Field. The win places the Sea Warriors just two points back in the PacWest standings.
Â
The hype for the match between the two PacWest heavyweights had been steadily growing on Fort Street over the weekend and the Sea Warriors came out ready to play.
Freshman sensation
Erik Kemsies kicked off the scoring for HPU in the 8
th minute after receiving a pass from
Daniel Haehre who had made a long run from his defensive position.
Less than three minutes later, it was Kemsies in on the action again, this time setting up teammate
Felipe Silva who nailed his PacWest-leading eighth goal of the year.
A
Mael Lefebvre save on an FPU penalty kick and a
Dylan Hardie-Jordan goal in the 42
nd minute gave HPU a 3-0 advantage heading into the break.
Â
"We knew going in it was a must win to keep pace with the leader of the conference. The boys came out and played fantastic. We built the halftime lead that was necessary against an explosive team like Fresno Pacific," said HPU Head Coach
Chris Fisher.
Attempting to close the gap, it was FPU who scored first after the break, cutting the Sea Warrior's lead to 3-1 in the 50th minute.
Â
HPU quickly responded in the 58
th minute when Hardie-Jordan scored the goal of the match on a twisting one-touch volley from Kemsies. Silva added the Sea Warriors fifth goal of the match in the 78
th minute and the route was on, allowing Fisher to empty his bench getting the reserves some extra playing time.
Â
Coach Fisher commented on his team's well-rounded game, "I'm proud of our defense and guys like Erik (Kemsies), Felipe (Silva), Dylan (Hardie-Jordan) and company continue to provide great moments. We scored some beautiful goals. It's a big win for us."
Â
Silva and Hardie-Jordan each scored two goals for HPU while Kemsies had a big day collecting a goal and three assists. Lefebvre made several big saves to protect the lead including the penalty kick in the 12
th minute.
Â
A frustrated Sunbirds side played much of the second half short-handed after having players sent off in the 54
th and 61
st minutes.
Â
The Sea Warriors return to action on October 14
th when they face Dominican University of California at Atherton Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
