KANEOHE, HI (October 22, 2013) – After two lackluster performances to open the season, the Hawai'i Pacific Men's Golf Team found its stride today. The Sea Warriors posted a final score of 294, nine strokes better than Chaminade (303), and 12 strokes better than BYU-Hawaii (306).
The Sea Warriors were closely bunched all around par;
James Fawssett was again the best of the bunch with an even par 72. The London native had a slow start on the front nine as he dropped four shots on the first four holes, he roared back however on the second nine going three-under.
"I got off to a bad start, but I battled back well. I also finished strong as I hit a six-iron on the par-three 18th to within two feet and tapped in for birdie, said Fawssett."
Alec Fourie finished just one shot back of the senior leader (73) at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
"I was striking the ball really well, but again struggled putting, missing lots of short birdie opportunities. However, I rallied on the 14th hole, after a bad break, by draining a 15-footer for par. I finished the last five holes at one-under," said Fourie.
Jeff Blais proved to be worth the wait after redshirting last season, the Ohio product posted a strong 74 today.
"I struck the ball very well today. I hit some terrific iron shots, but I didn't capitalize on any putts. I am looking forward to the Dennis Rose," said Blais.
Kevin Goldstein posted a 75 to round out the countable scores.
Gabriel Hernandez had an uncharacteristically poor round (82).
"It's hard to shoot a good score when you can't hit a green (in regulation). I hit almost every fairway, but really struggled with every club other than my driver. Not a good day at all," said the freshman.
HPU picked a good time to step up its play with the Dennis Rose Invitational a week away. The fall season's marquee event starts on 28th on the Big Island.
