PHOENIX, AZ (February 23, 2013)- For the second consecutive season the Hawai'i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (16-6, 12-4) went on the road to upset a ranked Grand Canyon (21-6, 13-3) team, this time winning a 64-63 thriller over the 19th ranked Antelopes.
HPU would not hold a lead in the first half and fell behind by as many as 15 points early, but cut the defect to six at the break. Down 30-15, the Sea Warriors closed the half on an 11-2 run that included a pair of
Melody Ladrido three-pointers. Although down by six at the break, HPU went in to the locker room hot and would take the momentum in to the second half.
The Sea Warriors came out of the locker room on a 17-8 run to take a 43-40 lead with 9:55 to play. The lead alternated back-and-forth until the Sea Warriors took the lead for good after a
Skye Savini three-pointer with 45 seconds to play.
Susannah Walmsley and Savini hit key free throws down the stretch to hold off the Antelope comeback bid.
HPU would finish the game shooting 44.4 percent (24-54) from the field including 46.7 percent (7-15) from behind the arc. Defensively, the Sea Warriors held the 'Lopes to 37.9 percent (22-58) from the field, just 35.7 percent (5-14) from three-point range.
HPU received multiple contributions as five different Sea Warriors ended in double-digits. Walmsley and Savini each finished with 10 points while Anton added 12 points and game-high eight assists. Ladrido and
Mikela Thoemmes contributed 13 and 11 points respectively for the Sea Warriors off the bench.
HPU entered the game as the tenth ranked team in the NCAA West Region while Grand Canyon came in ranked fifth. The victory also keeps the Sea Warriors in line for the second seed for the inaugural PacWest Women's Basketball Tournament.
The HPU women now head north to St. George, Utah to face Dixie State on Monday; tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 PM MST.
