Baseball Double Dips on Opening Day

Waipahu, HI (February 2, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific baseball team (2-0) took both ends of today's doubleheader over Augustana College (0-2), the Sea Warriors doubled up the Vikings in game one, 14-7, and got a walk-off walk to win the nightcap 7-6 in extra innings.

Sea Warriors fan were treated to nearly eight hours of baseball on opening day, starting with a slugfest in game one. HPU fell behind early with Augustana scoring three times in the second inning. However, by the end of the third inning, HPU had its first lead of the season at 5-3. The inning was highlighted by a three-run double from Chad Bolibol.

HPU would tack on two more runs in the fourth, in part due to a solo homerun by newcomer Marvin Campbell. Augustana made it a 7-6 game by adding three more runs in the sixth inning, chasing Sea Warrior ace Michael Murray from the game.

The Sea Warriors essentially clinched the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when six HPU runners would cross the plate. Sophomore Codey Ellenwood homered to left center to bring in three of the runs.

Murray was good enough to get the win, yielding six runs (four earned) in five and a third innings. The 2012 All-Region selection was uncharacteristically wild, issuing six walks.

It was the Vikings who would again strike first in game two, in the second inning they plated two runs on two hits and two Sea Warrior errors. HPU would answer with three runs in the third inning featuring RBI from Kale Sumner, Keanu Kapana, and Bolibol. Campbell and Tyler Tokunaga would then drive in runs in the fourth inning to give HPU a 5-2 advantage.

Augustana made it a one run game at 5-4 after scoring twice in 5th inning. That is how the game would remain until the 7th inning when HPU closer Ed Trovato gave up a pair of runs to give the Vikings a 6-5 lead.

Undeterred, HPU would battle back in the last of the 7th. Campbell led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Sumner would leg out an infield hit and the throw would get away from the first baseman allowing Campbell to score the equalizing run.

In the extra frame, Trovato downed the Vikings and the Sea Warriors' good eyes would take over. Jordan Inamasu walked to lead off the inning, Wade Tamaru then singled, after a fielder's choice Tokunaga walked to load the bases. Marvin Campbell then walked to end the game.

Bolibol went 4-7 with three doubles and five RBI in the doubleheader after redshirting a year ago. Campbell, the UNLV transfer, was as good as advertised. He went 5-9 with a home run and four RBI. Tamaru continues to be one of the best ninth place hitters in the country, he went 4-9. Tokunaga added three hits.

The teams will play another doubleheader tomorrow at Hans L'Orange Park, starting at noon.
