Waipahu, HI (January 3, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific baseball team (3-1) continued its offensive onslaught on Sunday, scoring a combined 41 runs in the doubleheader. Despite the offensive fireworks, HPU lost game one 24-19 but rallied for a 22-1 romp over Augustana College (1-3) in the night cap.
Game one was marathon; it lasted 11 innings and nearly five and a half hours. HPU staged several remarkable comebacks, but failed to get the big hit late that would have won the game.
The game was tied at 11 in the bottom the ninth and the Sea Warriors had the first two men of the inning on base, but back-to-back strikeout short circuited the rally. In the top of the 10th inning, all hope seemed to be lost after the Vikings scored seven runs.
Undeterred, HPU launched a furious rally to tie the game at 18.
Kale Sumner brought in the two tying runs on a two-out triple. However, Sumner was stranded on third and the game moved to the 11th inning.
In the 11th, Augustana picked up where it left off in the 10th, scoring six more times. This time HPU was unable to match, losing its first game of the season.
Sumner went 4-5 in the loss with two doubles and the big triple. He drove in five runs, scored twice and also walked twice.
Marvin Campbell swatted his second home run in as many days and added a double. He also drove in five runs, scored four times, and walked twice.
Game two was a Sea Warrior beatdown from the outset. After the third inning, HPU led 14-0. As good as the bats were, the story might have been the dominance of
Cory Yuh on the mound. Yuh saved a taxed bullpen by throwing a complete game four-hitter. He yielded one run and four walks while striking out seven.
Russell Doi went 3-5 in the second game with three runs scored and two RBI.
Chad Bolibol drove in four runs and scored three times to continue his hot start to the season. Campbell,
Derek Nakasato,
Codey Ellenwood, and
Jordan Inamasu all collected two hits each.
The two teams will wrap up the five-game series tomorrow at Hans L'Orange Park at 6:00 PM.
