Men’s Golf Edges Silverswords

Waimanalo, HI (April 15, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Golf Team had its second best round of the season and defeated Chaminade 294-296 in a duel match on a soggy day at Olomana Golf Links. Junior Ian Boat won medalist honors with a one-under par 71.

After coming up short against the 'Swords in the last two events, the Sea Warriors exacted their revenge on Monday. It also gave HPU some momentum with one week till the PacWest Championships.

Boat struck the ball well throughout the round on his way to 71. The Kansas native also knows he could have gone lower, “I finished poorly with two bogeys coming in. I'm looking to make up for it at the PacWest Championship."

Although the duel was technically hosted by Chaminade, it was really a home match for Channing Nueku who is an employee at Olomana Golf Links. Nueku looked comfortable on his way to an even par 72. “I did my best to keep my round together today. I got off to a great start, but then I started to give back a couple of strokes. I'm not happy with my outcome only because this is my home course and I really wanted to do well. However, overall I had a pretty good round today,” said the freshman.

Travis Miller shot a three-over par 75. Playing in the first position, Miller had a consistent round. Putting was a bit tricky on the wet surface. “The greens slowed up a lot because of the rain and it confused me, this led to too many three-putts. However, I did birdie 18 and it feels great to finish strong,” said Miller.

Freshman Christian Yagi was just behind Miller with a 76.

Captain Andy Rodby shot an 81 to round out the Sea Warrior attack. “I started off slow and didn't find my swing until the back nine. Overall, my game was getting up and down to see a lot of pars.”

HPU next travels to Phoenix for the PacWest Men's Golf Championships, hosted by Grand Canyon University, on April 22nd and 23rd.
