FRESNO, CA (April 27, 2013) – In the last at bat of his college career,
Marvin Campbell hit a grand slam. Fellow senior
Kale Sumner went deep in game one of the doubleheader, but the storybook ending was incomplete as the Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team lost both games to Fresno Pacific. HPU lost game one 7-2 and game two 8-5.
The Sunbirds jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game one in the third inning.
HPU responded with two runs in the top of the fourth. After
Tyler Tokunaga singled to lead off the inning, Sumner clubbed his fourth home run of the season to left field.
The Sumner blast would be the lone highlight in game one. The Sea Warriors just managed four hits the rest of the way.
Bryson Gauthe pitched an inning in relief where he surrendered a run, but it was unearned.
The scoring drought would continue into game two, but not for FPU. The Sunbirds scored a run in the first, three in the second, two in the fourth, and two in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead.
After 11 combined scoreless innings, HPU would break through and make things interesting in the 7th inning. The bases were loaded by two walks and a
Jordan Oshiro hit, they were unloaded by Campbell's slam to right. The score was 8-4 as
Codey Ellenwood restarted the rally with a hit. He would score on an RBI from
Keanu Kapana. However, this is as close as the Sea Warriors would get.
HPU had its opportunities, getting 11 hits but stranding eight runners.
Sea Warriors errors also led to two unearned runs.
Kapana went 3-3 from the plate to pace the offense. Campbell added a single to go 2-4 in his last game at HPU.
Bobby Jackson was a bright spot on the mound, throwing one and two-thirds scoreless innings, not allowing a hit and striking out two.
HPU ends the season with a record of 30-20 overall and 19-17 in the PacWest.
